Kaeng Krachan Elephant Park at Zoo Zurich

With a particularly eye-catching 6,800 square metre big curved roof, the Kaeng Krachan Elephant Park which opened in 2014 is the new home of the elephants living at the Zoo Zurich. The flat, freely-shaped wooden frame consists of 271 skylights made of UV-permeable ETFE foil covering. The net-like, transparent organic structure has a diameter of 80 metres and is in harmony with the surrounding woodland. Special attention was drawn to the sustainability with the main construction material being wood. Heating is provided via a district heating network using the central wood-chip heating system at Zoo Zurich. Water supplies consist of rain water and an ingenious control system ensures air-conditioning.
